Summer in Germany

Say, you get together with family and friends for a few days, for anniversaries, birthdays, and the like. Everybody knows that you are a photographer or that you like photographing. And you end up actually photographing.

What do you photograph? How do you capture a family and friends gathering?

Here are a few ideas:

Food – On the Table ©Alina Oswald.
  • photograph people, capture informal shots, experiment with funny poses
  • capture individuals, as well as group portraits, semi-formal and “in action,” doing something, for example, chatting, playing with a pet, in the kitchen, at the grill, etc.
  • photograph food and drinks, and decorations, too
  • photograph childhood items, mementos, and such–an old toy or book or scrapbook, old photographs, and so on
  • capture the setting, it can be your childhood home, your friends’ new place, etc.
  • capture the surroundings, in other words, don’t limit yourself to photographing a home or a room, but also the surrounding nature, town, or city
  • go exploring (by yourself or with family and friends), capture the neighborhood, and photograph your loved ones and others along the way
  • use the light to paint and enhance a mood
  • photograph at different times of the day
  • capture gestures and interactions
  • capture special moments (get and be ready to capture them: a hug, a smile, special facial expressions, body language, etc.)
  • capture details, as well as the “big picture”
  • try to tell the full story of the event
  • have fun while at it!
