Gift Ideas for Photographers
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and, with it, the beginning of the holiday season. Hence, the idea for this blog post–gift ideas for photographers. So, here it goes:
Gear. One can never have enough photo and/or lighting gear. But ask first, learn more about the actual needs before you go out and buy that lens or camera, etc. Other ideas can include special photo paper, photographer’s gloves for shooting outdoors in cold weather, wristbands (they do come in handy, especially when having to hold the camera, in particular with a long lens attached to it, for hours on end), and many, many more. Think beyond the obvious gift ideas.
Books on photography. There are plenty of good books out there, including the latest edition of Light, Science and Magic.
Books on a subject of interest, not only on photography-related subjects but perhaps on subjects the photographer wants to cover.
Subscription to a photography trade publication.
Courses or workshops on photography or on other photography-related subjects. These could include photo editing software, the business of photography, lighting, and many more.
Photo Review/Photo Expo: A photography portfolio review, as part or not of a photo expo or a photo workshop as part of that expo.
A trial subscription for the newest photo editing software.
A photo walk in a city of the photographer’s choice or even better, a photography tour to a place of the photographer’s choice. It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. If possible, offer to be a guide in that city or country for a day, and take the photographer to places you consider interesting. Or take the photographer to a museum, like the Bauhaus Museum in Berlin, or on a crawl through Chelsea Artists District, especially on a Thursday night, gallery opening night.
Model for the photographer for a test shoot. This could be a win-win for both the model and photographer.
Offer to assist during a shoot, especially if it’s a more complex photo shoot. You might end up having fun, while at it.
Offer help with a website, bio, or logo, if you can.
Or just take the photographer on a night out and have some fun. We all need a break once in a while.
If possible, try to think outside the box when it comes to gifts, not only for photographers but also in general. Think beyond the obvious. Gifts don’t need to be expensive. They need to come from the heart.
